There are some who fear magic. There are others who wish to study it. And then there are the dangerous few who wish to obtain it, or at the very least to control those who have it. No one knew where the magic came from. They only knew that it followed certain bloodlines, and it extended your life well beyond that of a normal human.

My mother told me awful stories of them rounding up mages and throwing them in dungeons. They were forced into servitude or they lost their heads. She also told me that some of them were kept for breeding.

She taught my sister and I how to use our blood magic, but made us swear to never do it outside. We were never permitted to wander too far from home. We were safer at the base of the mountains–near the dragons. The humans wouldn’t come here, she had said. They’d never risk it.

Until they did.
